Books Distribution Drive: 10,000 Books Reach 50 Schools

At Sayam Foundation, we believe that a book is more than paper and ink — it's a gateway to a future that a child might never have imagined. That belief drove us to launch one of our most ambitious campaigns yet: distributing 10,000 books to 50 schools across 8 states in India.

Why This Campaign Mattered

India has over 1.5 million registered schools, but millions of children in government and low-budget private schools lack access to basic textbooks. The NCERT syllabus changes every few years, and many families simply cannot afford to buy new books annually. The result? Children share torn, outdated textbooks — or worse, have no books at all.

We set out to change that. Our goal was ambitious: 10,000 brand-new, curriculum-aligned books — textbooks, reference books, storybooks, and activity books — delivered directly to schools where they were needed most.

A single book can change the trajectory of a child's life. Ten thousand books can change the trajectory of an entire community.

The Journey: From Warehouse to Classroom

The logistics of distributing 10,000 books across 8 states is no small feat. Here's how we made it happen:

1. Sourcing and Procurement

We partnered with three major publishers to procure books at cost, ensuring that every rupee went further. Each book was carefully selected to match the current NCERT curriculum and the grade level of students in our target schools. We also included storybooks in Hindi, Bengali, Odia, and Marathi to encourage reading in local languages.

2. Warehouse and Sorting

All 10,000 books arrived at our Delhi warehouse, where a team of 40 volunteers spent two weekends sorting them into grade-specific bundles. Each bundle was labeled with the school name, grade, and number of students it would serve. The volunteers packed the books into sturdy boxes with waterproof lining for safe transport.

3. Transportation

We arranged for two dedicated trucks to carry the books to distribution points in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra. At each state, our local coordinators received the boxes and transported them to individual schools — sometimes by bus, sometimes by auto-rickshaw, and in remote areas, even by hand cart.

4. Distribution Events

At each school, we organized a small distribution ceremony. Children lined up excitedly as volunteers handed each student their personal book bundle. Teachers were present to guide students on how to use the books, and we held a short session on the importance of reading and education.

State-Wise Impact

• Uttar Pradesh: 15 schools, 3,000 books — reaching 2,800 students across Varanasi, Lucknow, and Gorakhpur districts
• Bihar: 8 schools, 1,600 books — focused on Patna and Gaya where dropout rates are highest
• Jharkhand: 6 schools, 1,200 books — targeting tribal communities in Ranchi and Jamshedpur areas
• Odisha: 6 schools, 1,200 books — reaching remote villages in Koraput and Kalahandi districts
• Rajasthan: 5 schools, 1,000 books — distributed in Jaipur and Udaipur government schools
• Madhya Pradesh: 5 schools, 1,000 books — supporting schools in Bhopal and Indore
• Chhattisgarh: 3 schools, 600 books — reaching Raipur and Durg districts
• Maharashtra: 2 schools, 400 books — distributed in rural Pune and Satara

The Impact So Far

Three months after distribution, our monitoring team visited the schools to assess the impact. The results were remarkable:

• 92% of students reported using their new books daily
• 78% of teachers said the books improved classroom engagement
• 65% improvement in homework completion rates
• 40% increase in library visits (where libraries existed)
• 100% of schools requested more books for the next academic year

Stories from the Ground

Behind every book is a child with a story. Here are a few that touched our hearts:

Priyanka, Class 5, Odisha: Priyanka's family lives in a kutcha house with no electricity. She studies by the light of a kerosene lamp every night. When she received her new science textbook, she told our volunteer, "I can now read about stars and planets even though I can't see them at night." Her teacher says she's now the most curious student in class, asking questions about everything she reads.

Arjun, Class 3, Bihar: Arjun had never owned a storybook. When he opened the Hindi storybook from his bundle, he sat under a tree and read it cover to cover in one sitting. He then asked his mother to read it to his younger siblings. His mother told us, "For the first time, my son is teaching ME something."

Sunita, Class 7, Rajasthan: Sunita wants to be a doctor but had no access to biology textbooks. When she received her new biology book, she started a study group with five friends. They meet every evening to study together. "Now we can prepare for our exams properly," she said.
