From a single classroom in New Delhi to impacting over 50,000 children across 15+ states — this is the journey of Sayam Foundation.
Where It All Started
Sayam Foundation was born in the winter of 2015, when a group of passionate young professionals in New Delhi witnessed the harsh reality faced by children in urban slums — bright, eager minds trapped in a cycle of poverty with no access to basic educational materials. A child named Aarav, who walked two kilometers to school without a notebook or pencil, became the catalyst for change.
Our founders — Rajesh Kumar, Priya Sharma, and Amit Verma — pooled their personal savings and distributed the first set of books and stationery to 47 children in the slums of East Delhi. That single act of kindness sparked a movement that would grow beyond their wildest dreams.
Registered under the Indian Trusts Act, 1882, Sayam Foundation began as a trust dedicated to the principle that no child should be denied the right to learn because of their family's economic condition. The name "Sayam" — meaning patience and self-restraint — reflects our belief that meaningful change requires steady, persistent effort.
Building the Foundation
First School Partnership
In 2016, we partnered with Government Primary School, Lajpat Nagar — our first official school. We provided textbooks, notebooks, pencils, erasers, and school bags to 120 students. Teachers reported a 40% improvement in attendance within three months.
Book Drive Campaign
Our first large-scale book drive collected over 5,000 donated textbooks and children's storybooks. Volunteers sorted, cleaned, and distributed these books to three schools across Delhi. This became the blueprint for our annual book collection drives that continue today.
Women's Self-Help Group
Recognizing that children's education depends on family stability, we launched our first women's self-help group in 2018. Fifteen women from slum communities received tailoring and handicraft training, enabling them to earn supplementary income and invest in their children's schooling.
Scaling Across India
By 2019, Sayam Foundation had expanded beyond Delhi into Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. We established a structured distribution model where local volunteers identified schools in need, assessed requirements, and coordinated book and supply deliveries.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 tested our resolve but also revealed the depth of the education crisis. When schools shut down, millions of underprivileged children lost access to learning materials entirely. We pivoted quickly, launching our "Learn at Home" initiative — distributing printed study packets, basic hygiene kits, and nutritional supplements to over 8,000 children in four months.
Despite lockdowns and supply chain disruptions, our volunteer network of over 300 dedicated individuals continued door-to-door delivery of educational materials. The pandemic period saw us emerge stronger, more organized, and more committed than ever.
